Summary of Project: The Benefit El Salvador Project is an ongoing fundraising effort to contribute to the supply of medical equipment and resources for rural public health care clinics in El Salvador. Currently, the project is working to raise $10,000 in order to purchase medical supplies for the clinics in Taquillo and Zaragoza. Together these clinics serve a population of approximately 40,000 people. The clinics see between 120-180 patients every day, but they lack much of the medical equipment and supplies that are essential for treatment. These are the only public health care facilities in these areas. Why This Project Matters: The impact of the Benefit El Salvador Project will make a difference far beyond the lifetime of an individual piece of equipment. The majority of public health care facilities in El Salvador are seriously under-supplied and frequently under-staffed. This is true for the largest hospital in the nation (Hospital Rosales in San Salvador) as well as for the smaller clinics throughout the country. This problem leads to a reduction in the quality of health care services, and a lack of confidence in the well trained, hard working physicians and nurses. Equipping the clinic staff with the tools they need and an adequate supply of resources will translate to improved health care services and increased confidence in providers. This means that people will be more likely to seek out palliative and preventive medical care rather than avoiding or fearing a visit to the doctor. Click Here To Make a Donation |
More Information About This Project: The Benefit El Salvador Project is focused on delivering medical supplies to rural clinics in El Salvador, but the problem of insufficient supplies permeates the country's entire public health care system. Hospital Rosales is the largest public hospital in El Salvador. Though it is big, it struggles with the same lack of supplies and resources that undermine the health care services in the smaller rural clinics. According to Mario Aravalo, laywer and secretary of the Hospital Rosales Labor Union, between January and June, 2009 (6 months time) more than 16,000 surgeries were not performed due to lack of equipment and staff. He also explained that an average of 300 patients are turned away from the emergency room everyday as a result of the deficiency in resources. There are private health care providers in El Salvador, however only about 1% of the population can afford to take advantage of them. There is also the Salvadoran Institute of Social Security (ISSS), a government run health system that provides services to employed Salvadorans, but this only benefits about 18% of the population (read more here). This leaves the majority of the population to rely on a public health care system that continues to be desperately under supplied. The Benefit El Salvador Project is an opportunity to effectively deliver change to thousands of people in rural El Salvador. Your donation will help to provide the means to purchase the most urgently needed medical supplies, and will contribute directly and effectively to the improvement of the quality and availability of health care in these communities. The Benefit El Salvador Project is a small, grassroots effort designed to address the problem of insufficient medical supplies as identified by the clinics that operate in these areas. As a result, all donations are applied directly to achieving this goal. The Benefit El Salvador Project would like to emphasize the power of the individual. Consider that if 2000 people pitched in five dollars, the goal of the fundraising effort would be met. Your support is very appreciated. Click Here To Make A Donation |
