Economics

Much of the poverty that is endemic in mountain communities can be alleviated with simple economic initiatives. That is why The Mountain Fund believes so strongly in the benefits of microfinance. Microfinance programs cut out the banks and lending agencies, who often ask for collateral and guarantees that working families are unable to provide. Through small-scale loans to entrepreneurs and business owners, the initiatives that we support are working to increase the net income earned by mountain families. This means that children are able to attend school and adults are able to spend more time at home.

Aynikuy
A Micro-finance loan in Peru enabled a family to open this vending stand.

Peru: "Aynikuy", in Quechua, means to help each other or to cooperate. Aynikuy is also the name of The Mountain Fund's new microfinance program in Peru. Our goal is to provide small loans to twenty family businesses.

Funding Need: $4,800 USD
