Our Newest Objective:

"New Smiles" Fund

Over 30,000 children in India are born every year with cleft palates or cleft lips. Less than half of these children receive the treatment they need because they are too poor to either pay for the procedure, or to travel to places that offer these treatments free of cost. A cleft palate can be corrected or improved with a basic, two-step surgical procedure that takes as little as 45 minutes, on up to a more complex surgery of 5 to 6 hours. North East India Project has formed a new partnership with Smile Train in India to help provide this type of medical treatment for children in the areas where we work are working.

Your contributions help children like these be able to go to a partnering doctor and have this procedure done, before it's too late.

Just $175.00 will pay one time, for one persons travel, meals, lodging, as well as the procedure given by a Smile Train doctor.

Facts about Yimjenkimong Village:

  • The school consists of 92 children, in grades Kindergarten through 5th.
  • There is only up to an 8th grade level education available in the village: K through 5th in the private school; K through 6th in the government school; and 7th-8th in the government middle school.
  • The private school is built with bamboo woven interior walls, which rot and have to be replaced every few years; corrugated tin exterior walls and roof; and dirt floors.
  • In 2007, only five elementary teachers were available for eight classes. They were forced to discontinue 6th grade and send the rest of the children for only half-days, to make time to teach the remaining seven classes.
